And so India realized why every mentor she’d ever known had advised her to never mix business with pleasure, and why all those mentors broke the rule.  Because even in the dog-eat-dog shark tank they lived in, it was possible to care.  Easy, in fact.  The late night design sessions, the launch party alcohol, all of it spurred her purely sexual feelings for her friend to blossom into much more—as much as it choked her to admit, compassion.  And it scared her.  Caring about someone gives them power over you.  Caring about someone drives you to do everything for that person.  And even then, the people you care about are the ones who hurt you in the end.

Jeremy, who came at her every need, at every beck and call.  Who insisted on helping, even when she insisted he not.  Who was there to save her from every fashion mishap, every hangover, every creepy date, every awful client, yet rejoiced by her side at every victory.  Who offered steaming coffee in the mornings, tasteless jokes in the meetings, familiar warmth after every heartbreak.  He always picked up the pieces when she was broken.  But he’s gone now.  It’s over.  It hurts.  And she needs him to put her back together.
